Nexium is a medication used to treat conditions such as:

How Nexium works

Nexium was introduced in the US in 1999 as an over-the-counter (OTC) proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and later became a prescription drug (). In the U. S., the drug was known as theesomeprazoleor proton pump inhibitor (EAPPI) and its approval was granted to AstraZeneca (AZ), Astra Zeneca (AZ), Bristol Myers Squibb (BMU), Wyeth (WY), and Teva (TEV) in 2005 ().

In August 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Nexium (EAPPI) as a prescription drug (). The drug is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic heartburn in adults and children ages 4 years of age and older ().

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) indicated for the treatment of reflux esophagitis (RE). This is a type of GERD that causes frequent regurgitation and esophageal sphincter blockage. The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal upset, stomach pain, and diarrhea (). GERD is caused by excess acid production and reflux of the stomach (gastric acid). GERD may result in a persistent acid reflux and esophagitis.

The most common side effects of Nexium in the US include:
